A reservoir of vitamins and minerals, nuts are especially important in early spring in the diet of adults and children, from the age of two.

It is during this period that the intake of natural vitamins in the form of fresh fruits and vegetables ends. And this healthy food product is always on hand if stored properly.

How to properly clean the shell

It looks like it might be easier than grabbing a hammer, hitting harder, and you're done. However, in this case, the almond will be crushed and mixed with the shell. It will not be practical and will take a long time to select the surviving core fragments.

There are several ways to peel walnuts from the shell at home, which will keep the kernels intact and not warped. Thanks to these methods, there is hardly any waste (except the helmet itself).

Whole grains are not only pleasant to eat but are also convenient to use for confectionery purposes, for example, to decorate cakes.

Before starting to crack walnuts, it is imperative to prepare them for this procedure: put them in a preheated oven at + 200 ° C for 10-15 minutes.

The hard shell prepared by the above method can be easily broken using the methods described below.

In a slider pack

Once the fruit has cooled, place all three in a removable sturdy polyethylene bag.

After hitting this bag on a cutting board, the shell will surely crack as it has become very brittle due to the heat treatment in the oven.

It is necessary to wrap it so that the shell does not spread in different directions throughout the apartment. Then you need to remove the shells and almonds from the bag and separate the almond halves from the inedible parts. This will give you six halves.

A bottle of champagne

Place the walnut on a cutting board and tap it gently with the concave side of the bottle. It should fall into the hollow at the bottom of the bottle.

Sometimes you have to turn the screw and repeat the blow. The nucleus often remains completely intact using this method.

Wrench

If you have such a tool on your farm, it will not be difficult for you to peel the nuts from the shell.

The plumbing wrench has a plug that will allow the press parts of the appliance to be adjusted to a certain compression width. The fruits are roughly the same size, so you only have to do the marking once.

Then you need to insert the nut into the space between the pressure elements of the wrench and press it slightly; the casing cracks instantly.

If you don't have such a wrench at home, you can use pliers, but you need to squeeze them carefully so as not to completely flatten the core.

Kitchen knife

This method is very effective, but only suitable for tidy people. It is necessary to insert the edge of a knife into the blunt end of the walnut, at the junction of its halves, where the side of the fruit is blunt and wide, and not sharp.

Then slowly loosen the shell at the joint until it breaks in half. After that, remove the cores with the help of the same knife.

The sharp side of the hammer

You can easily and cleanly break the shell with a hammer without damaging the precious interior. However, you need to know where to hit and which side of the hammer to hit.

Important! The sharp side of the hammer will reduce the impact area, preventing the fruit from being completely crushed.

Place a waffle napkin on a wooden cutting board and place a walnut on it. Using the sharp and blunt side of the hammer, strike perpendicular to the line where the halves meet.

How to dry walnuts

Drying a walnut is a very important and necessary step in preparing it for storage.

Fresh walnuts contain around 40% moisture and therefore spoil easily. If all the drying conditions are not met, it will not be possible to store the fruits for a long time.

Natural drying

If you have a dry woodshed or shed on your farm, you can spread the harvested crop in a layer of natural material or in hay and allow the Fruits to dry take a period of 2 to 3 weeks.

Air drying is not recommended, because during this time it will most likely rain at least once and spoil the whole process; in this case, the shelf life of the fruits will be zero.

This ancient method of drying at home has other drawbacks as well. For example, during such a long stay in the soil, pests or microorganisms can penetrate the fruit, which can completely destroy the crop.

Natural drying on a rack

This method is used by modern farmers, whose harvest volumes are large enough.

Thrifty homeowners strive to fully preserve the highest quality product while allowing minimal investment for the drying process itself.

Also, find out how much nuts to eat per day. n advance, special containers are made of dry wood - lattice trays.

The walnuts are washed in cold water and placed in a drying tool in a single layer. Then the trays are placed on special shelves.

These are made in such a way as to ensure efficient air circulation between each layer.

The crop thus prepared is allowed to dry for three weeks. These fruits are suitable for consumption, commercial sale, and also as quality planting material.

At home, you can also apply the above method. Having made yourself a container with trellis trays once, you and your family will always be provided with a properly preserved crop of your tree.

"Fire" dried

The artificial drying method is significantly more expensive than natural drying, but it is quick and efficient.

If it is necessary to prepare the nuts for long-term storage, they should be dried, without peeling, in a preheated oven at + 90 ° C for 2-3 hours.

Then the oven should be turned off and the product should cool. After this treatment, your harvest can be consumed gradually throughout the winter period.

Shelled walnuts can also be dried in the oven, but large broths should not be made, because, without their natural protection, almonds will quickly crumble and deteriorate.

The grains should be placed on a baking sheet covered with foil so that they do not come into contact with each other and dried for 10 minutes in a preheated oven at a temperature of + 180 ° C.

After 5 minutes, the beans should be mixed.

How to store unpeeled nuts

Without a doubt, shelled nuts have a much longer shelf life than shelled nuts. Their shelf life depends on the variety, precision, and speed of the method of harvesting, drying, and storage.

A cool, dry place is considered ideal for storage, where the fruits will be in containers made of natural material: in canvas bags or in wooden crates. Important! If you protect the nuts from moisture first, they will stay in great condition until late spring.

How to store shelled walnuts

Beans can be stored for up to 1 month at room temperature. After this time, they lose their flavor, may turn rancid, dry unnecessarily, crumble or wrinkle.

Some housewives who have separate freezers store the peeled almonds in sealed plastic bags for up to 1 year. It is very convenient to store a previously grated product in the freezer for baking sweets or for other purposes.

Important factors for successful storage of nuts are:

  • Compliance with low-temperature conditions.

  • Moisture protection.

  • Shelled walnuts keep better without additives (sugar, salt, honey, etc.).

  • Polyethylene is only suitable for storing nuts in the freezer; otherwise, only natural materials are suitable.

  • Chopped walnuts keep much shorter than whole ones, and preferably in the freezer.

  • Freeze the grains in small portions, which can be eaten completely after thawing, otherwise, they may deteriorate with frequent temperature changes.

  • The shelled walnuts can be stored until the next harvest, the shelled almonds are not stored for more than 6 months.

How? 'Or' What? "Or" What keeps walnuts green?

Green nuts are very excellent thanks to a substance called juglone. It is a unique antiseptic substance that is contained in sufficient quantity in the young fruits of the nuts and the outer green pericarp.

Therefore, to maintain immunity, as an antiviral and antimicrobial agent, it is important to use jam from green fruits and fresh young grains of "milk".

Unfortunately, it is almost impossible to keep walnuts green. The only way to preserve it is to cook jam from these fruits or prepare a tincture with alcohol.

To regularly consume a nutritious and healthy nut product, it is worth devoting your efforts not only to its collection but also to its proper storage. The properly prepared broth will provide you with nuts until the next harvest.
